Welcome to the Shiloh High School Industrial Technology Program web site. Shiloh High School Mission Statement The Mission of Shiloh High School District #1 is to become a premier educational system by challenging all students to achieve their maximum potential by providing an education focused on meeting the unique needs of the individual student and providing a quality educational environment with participation by, and the support of, the community. Industrial Technology Department Mission Statement The new millennium is bringing about swift and dramatic changes in the industry and economy of the United States of America. Because of these changes, the education and career opportunities of the population are also changing. Due to the complexity of society and the advancement of technology, the individual's security in the workforce is best achieved by providing a foundation of practical education based on the knowledge and skills needed by businesses, industries, and communities in our society. Shiloh High School Industrial Technology Program History With high school vocational programs around the state closing every year, many students are getting less exposure to the knowledge and skills these programs have to offer. When I was in high school, the vocational program dramatically effected my life, so much so, that I am now an Industrial Technology instructor myself. Naturally, I find this trend of closing programs disheartening. When the program first began, we had very little in the line of equipment and tooling. The students and I took inventory of our situation and began reorganizing and making repairs to machines that were not working. We built some of our own machines and jigs. We also requisitioned for what we needed to make the lab functional. During the school year we took the time to build and repair items for the school district. We started making a yearly report to the school board outlining the accomplishments of the program. The students also began making items such as mantle clocks to give to people who had helped the program. This generated good will in the school district and community. We also found local industry very willing to contribute technical support, to loan equipment, provide work/study employment, speakers, field trips, and financial contributions. Shiloh High School's Industrial Technology program offers three levels of AutoCAD,three levels of manufacturing, two levels of Production, and one level of CAD/CAM. Students who advance to the upper level of AutoCAD spend their class time learning and working for the school district, local businesses and contractors producing architectural drawings and shop drawings. The student learns many manufacturing skills in the 3 manufacturing classes. By the end of each year, the student has a project h/she can take home with them. Our CAD/CAM class teaches machine code and MasterCAM generated code, as well as the basics of CNC machine operations. All of the classes previously mentioned prepare the student for our production class. Every year we build custom kitchen cabinets for homeowners locally and around the state. This endeavor raises thousands of dollars for our program. In this class the student faces many of the challenges and pressures any company would face such as; material handling, safety issues, quality control, time management, precise measurement, preparation processes, combination processes, coating technology, customer service, etc. The Industrial Technology Program at Shiloh High School is generating funds in the production class to help with the purchase of a Thermwood Model 40 CNC Router. We use the router in all of our manufacturing, production, and CAD/CAM classes. The program has also grown to include the summer months. During the summer, four to five students and I design and build items the school needs. We build items such as podiums, moveable shelf systems, cabinets, storage units, make general repairs. During the 2000-2001 school year we have formed an Industrial Technology Advisory Committee. This committee is composed of local business and community members, school administrators, and students. We are hoping to generate ownership, direction and support through this committee. Our Industrial Technology Program has joined with WoodLINKS USA, an organization that will help us reach our goal of linking education with industry. WoodLINKS USA will help industry attract the best students, find the best employees, make improvements in productivity, and provide the educational experiences needed. Students will be exposed to exciting careers, receive national certification recognized by industry, and obtain jobs right from school or a preferred standing in post-secondary programs. WoodLINKS donations of equipment and supplies assist students to connect with post-secondary wood programs. |
