National
Honor Society

The purpose of
the Shiloh National Honor Society (NHS) is to create enthusiasm for scholarship,
to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership and to
develop character in its students.
Membership in
NHS is an honor bestowed upon a student. Once selected, members have the
responsibility to continue to demonstrate the qualities of scholarship,
leadership, service and character. Membership is based upon:
-
Scholarship:
Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0/4.0 are
then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership,
and character.
-
Service:
This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by
a student to the school or community, done without compensation and
with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.
-
Leadership:
Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers,
promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and
persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences
can be drawn from school or community activity while working with
or for others.
-
Character:
The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics,
is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability,
shows courtesy, concern and respect for others and generally maintains
a good and clean lifestyle.
Any one wishing
to obtain a copy of the selection procedure may contact the Shiloh NHS
advisor, Ms. Sue Miller.
Activities of Shiloh NHS
-
September
is fundraising time. We hold a 50/50 raffle at the homecoming football
game and start working our share of the concession stands.
-
Also in
September, members accompany the elementary students on their fishing
field trip.
-
One of
the favorite service activities is helping at the Hume Peace Meals
and playing Bingo! Members volunteer in September, October, November.
-
We honor
our principal on Boss's/Principal's Day in October.
-
In November
we sponsor a dance for all jr. high students following a jr. high
boys basketball game.
-
Also in
November, we send Veterans Day cards to the VA hospital and to our
area American Legions.
-
In December
we decide on a worthy charity and make a donation. We also work with
the Student Council to collect, sort, pack, and deliver 45-50 food
baskets to families in our communities.
-
In January
we sponsor an Honor Roll Pizza party for all high school students
receiving Honor Roll status during the first semester.
-
In January
and February we select our new members for an induction ceremony in
March.
-
Some time
during the year we find a community service activity to complete.
We have hosted an Adult Prom, Bingo games, painted and helped put
together playground equipment, and taken treats to the nursing home.
We are always on the lookout for a way to help our communities.
-
In April
we celebrate National Student Leadership Week, honor our school secretaries
on Administrative Professional's Day,
-
May finds
us honoring the teachers on National Teacher Day. We also honor
our school nurse with a gift for National School Nurse Day. And,
we look forward to receiving our gold and blue honor cords to wear
at graduation.

Leadership for Student Activities
Cocurricular activities are an excellent
support system for a school’s academic mission. They provide
opportunities for students to develop responsibility, character,
social skills, and critical thinking skills. Participants in cocurricular
activities are able to broaden their academic knowledge through
competitions and activities that are similar to real-world situations
(Kleese and D’Onofrio, 200). Cocurricular activities also
provide the opportunity for students to plan, manage, organize,
implement, and evaluate, giving them good training for life.
Activity programs provide lessons in teamwork,
commitment, time management, and social skills, all of which are
demanded for future occupations. Studies also indicate that students
who participate in cocurricular activities maintain higher grade
point averages, better attendance records, and fewer discipline
reports. Obviously, these characteristics excite employers. Students
who participate in cocurricular activities in a leadership role
receive a larger number of advanced degrees and more community leadership
roles than those who do not.
